What to understand

A mixed number has a whole-number part and a fraction part. For example, 1 3/4 means 1 whole and 3/4 more.

Before adding or subtracting, rewrite each mixed number as an improper fraction. For multiplication and division, improper fractions make the operation easier to organize.

Multiply: Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, then multiply across.
